Pat is 20 years older than his son James. In 2 years the Father will be Twice as old as James. How old are they now?

Given:

Now                                                                  After 2 years

x           (x + 20)                                         (x+2)     (x+20+2)

                                                                  (x+2)     (x+22)

                          Given Condition: 

                                                                  2(x + 2)=(x+22)

                                                                  2x + 4= x + 22

                                                                  2x-x = 22-4

                                                                   x=18

James     Pat

x             (x +20)

18           (18+20)=38

A Father is 4 times as old as his Son. In 0 years the Father will be twice as old as his Son. Find the present age of Each.

Solution:

Given:

Now                                                           After 20 yrs

Son        Father                                        Son       Father

x             4x                                             (x+20)   (4x+20)
                                 Given Condition:

                                                               2(x+20)=4x+20

                                                                2x+40=4x+20

                                                                 40-20=4x-2x

                                                                   20=2x

                                                                   2x=20

                                                                    x=20/2=10

Now

Son    Father

x        4x

10      4*10=40
